Canberra Australia
  • Canberra, Australia

More than just the seat of government, Canberra is a place of food, culture, parks and gardens!

Located near the Brindabella Ranges, and with Lake Burley Griffin at its centre, Canberra was chosen for the new location of Australia's Capital in 1908. Following Federation in 1901, Canberra was chosen as a geographic and economic compromise between New South Wales and Victoria. As a 20th Century city, Canberra was masterplanned, by renown American architect Walter Burley Griffin. The city follows a 'wheel-and-spoke' pattern, rather than a typical grid. Canberra is a city of momuments, and its roads and gardens were designed to give these prominence.

Namadgi also has some great starting points for abseiling. If you enjoy mountain-biking, head to Mt Stromlo, which has some of the best mountain-biking in the world. There's also plenty to do at Lake Burley Griffin, where you can kayak or take a segwey tour around the lake. Finally, the number one thing to do in Canberra, before you do anything else, is take a magnificent hot air balloon ride over the city. This will give you a good 'lay of the land', and is something you'll never forget.
